মোহিনীঅট্টম কেরল রাজ্য থেকে বিকশিত হয়েছে , যার নামকরণ করা হয়েছে বিষ্ণুর সম্মোহিনী অবতার মোহিনী থেকে, যিনি হিন্দু পুরাণ মতে তার সম্মোহিনী শক্তি ব্যবহার করে ভালো এবং মন্দের মধ্যে যুদ্ধে দেবতাদের জয়ী হতে সাহায্য করেছিলেন।

Mohiniyattam developed in the state of Kerala, gets its name from Mohini – the seductress avatar of Vishnu, who in Hindu mythology uses her charms to help the good prevail in a battle between good and evil.
