روی دیوار، یک صلیب بزرگ چوبی آویزان بود؛ چشمانش به آرامی متوجه چهره روی صلیب شد، اما التجایی در آن دیده نمیشد، فقط از دیدن این خدای سست و حلیم به بهت فرورفته بود؛ این خدایی که بر سر کشیش فاش کننده اعتراف او، صاعقه نباریده بود.
