Our decision-making authority over our lives is real, but circumscribed by our need to respond to God's invitation to know, trust, love and serve Him. Thus the Church rejects both assisted suicide (in which a patient voluntarily consumes a lethal dose of medication prescribed for that purpose by a physician) and euthanasia (intentionally killing another human being to end his or her suffering). Despite the understandable motives of such actions, they assume that there can be no meaning or purpose in allowing patients to continue their own process of letting go of life, for them or those around them.

La autoridad que conlleva tomar decisiones sobre nuestra vida es real, pero se arraiga en nuestra necesidad de responder a la invitación que nos hace Dios, para conocerle, confiar en él, amarle y servirle. Así pues, la Iglesia rechaza tanto el suicidio voluntario asistido (bajo el cual un paciente, por su pesar de los motivos comprensibles y altruistas de dichas acciones, en este caso se asume que no existe ni fundamento ni significado alguno que le permita a tal paciente continuar su propio proceso de llegar al fin de su vida, tanto para él o para ella, como para todos cuantos le rodean.
