Historisk var det endda inden for grundforskning at de første initiativer til europæisk videnskabeligt samarbejde blev taget da CERN (højenergifysik) blev oprettet i 50'erne, og ESO (astronomi), EMBO og EMBL (molekylærbiologi) i 60'erne [13]. Alle disse organisationer har stadig stor betydning for grundforskningen i Europa.

Historisch gesehen, wurden die ersten Schritte der wissenschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit in der Europäischen Union in der Grundlagenforschung unternommen. So wurden in den 50er Jahren die CERN (Hochenergiephysik) und in den 60er Jahren die ESO (Astronomie) sowie die EMBO und das EMBL (Molekularbiologie) [13] gegründet, die allesamt auch heute noch in Europa eine wichtige Rolle in der Grundlagenforschung spielen.

Από ιστορική άποψη, η βασική έρευνα είναι ακριβώς ο τομέας για τον οποίο ανελήφθησαν οι πρώτες πρωτοβουλίες ευρωπαϊκής επιστημονικής συνεργασίας, με τη δημιουργία, κατά τη δεκαετία του '50, του CERN, στη φυσική υψηλών ενεργειών, και κατά τη δεκαετία του '60 του ESO (αστρονομία), του EMBO και του EMBL (μοριακή βιολογία) [13], όλοι οργανισμοί που εξακολουθούν και σήμερα να διαδραματίζουν πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο σε θέματα βασικής έρευνας στην Ευρώπη.

Historically the first scientific cooperation initiatives in Europe were indeed launched in the area of basic research with the setting up of CERN in the field of high-energy physics in the 1950s, the ESO (astronomy) in the 1960s, and the EMBO and the EMBL (molecular biology), [13] all of which are organisations that continue to play a very important role in basic research in Europe today.

Desde el punto de vista histórico, debe señalarse que fue precisamente en el campo de la investigación fundamental donde nacieron las primeras iniciativas de cooperación científica europea, con la creación, en la década de los cincuenta, del CEIN, dedicado a la física de alta energía, y, en la década de los sesenta, de la ESO (astronomía), la OEBM y el LEBO (biología molecular) [13], organizaciones todas ellas que siguen cumpliendo actualmente una función muy importante en el campo de la investigación fundamental en Europa.
