At 9.30 p.m. on 18 November 1999, a boat belonging to the Spanish non‐governmental organization Paz y Tercer Mundo ‐ Hirugarren Mundua Ta Bakea was sailing along the river Atrato towards the city of Quibdó, the capital of the Colombian department of Chocó.
