The methods comprise depolymerizing the polyethylene terephthalate by heating in the presence of a hydrogen donor material and a strong base compound, and optionally a catalyst, to effect catalytic transfer hydrogenation and base cleavage and produce terephthalic and/or naphthalic acid, or a salt thereof, and ethylene glycol.
