Two subspecies were recognized in 1972 by Meester: P. t. tricuspis P. t. mabirae The tree pangolin ranges from Guinea through Sierra Leone and much of West Africa to Central Africa as far east as extreme southwestern Kenya and northwestern Tanzania.
