The green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is capable of photoproducing H2, as a by-product of photosynthesis. This can be exploited as renewable energy source. The hydrogenase enzyme is located at the acceptor side of photosystem I; it is highly efficient but very sensitive to oxygen.
