Sir John Chiverton is neither a true historical novel nor is it a gothic novel. It was also seen by Ainsworth as an incomplete work and he later ignored it when creating his bibliography. The novel does serve as a precursor to Ainsworth's first major novel, Rookwood.[11]

Ainsworth själv ansåg att Sir John Chiverton inte var fullbordad och när han senare skrev sin självbiografi valde han att utelämna denna roman. Trots detta låg Sir John Chiverton till grund när Ainsworth påbörjade arbetet med sin första större roman, vilken gick under namnet Rookwood.[2]
