También, a partir de Therias troncales, se observa consistentemente la superposición de una pequeña porción del astrágalo sobre el calcáneo, condición que se incrementa en Metatheria y aún más en Placentarios, donde encontramos que en el eje dorso-ventral la superposición del astrágalo sobre el calcáneo es casi competa, es decir, el contacto ocurre entre la cara ventral del astrágalo y la cara dorsal del calcáneo. En este trabajo se encuentra que al mirar el el cambio de posición entre el astrágalo y calcáneo, observando en estadios tempranos (13,5dpc) que tienen una posición relativa similar a la de reptiles y que luego en el desarrollo se el desarrollo el cuarto y quinto se fusionan, formando un solo elemento final: el unciforme.
