Industrial development began with 19th-century sawmills, continued with pulp mills (the first, at VAL-JALBERT, in 1901), paper mills (after 1925) and aluminum plants (1943), and was greatly encouraged by the construction of hydro stations at Alma (1923) and on the Rivière Péribonka (1951-60).

Le développement industriel, qui prend naissance à la fin du XIXe siècle avec la construction de scieries puis d'usines de pâte à papier (ouverture de la première usine à Val-Jalbert en 1902), d'usines de papier (après 1925) et d'alumineries (1943), est grandement favorisé par la construction de centrales hydroélectriques à Alma (1925) et sur la rivière Péribonka (1954-1960).
