The ancient name of Bolivar City, Angostura of the Orinoco is due to the fact that the rocks of the shield are very resistant to the erosion and presented in that point, a narrowing of about 800 meters of width that gave origin to a species of imprisonment during, probably, millions of years, until the river was gradually excavating the channel on granite rocks.

El antiguo nombre de Ciudad Bolívar, Angostura del Orinoco obedece al hecho de que las rocas del Escudo son muy resistentes a la erosión y presentaron en ese punto, un estrechamiento de unos 800 metros de anchura que dio origen a una especie de represamiento durante, probablemente, millones de años, hasta que el río fue excavando gradualmente el cauce sobre las rocas graníticas.
