General practitioners can limit the risk of adverse effects by following the recommendations of the ‘Polypharmacy for the Elderly’ guideline and by using the START (Screening Tool to Alert doctors to Right Treatment) and STOPP (Screening Tool of Older Person’s Prescriptions) criteria of the guideline.
