وقبل انضمام جورجيا إلى أسرة الأمم المتحدة في عام 1992، وجهت الحكومة والبرلمان في جمهورية أبخازيا نداء إلى الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة يحذران فيه الأمم المتحدة من الاعتراف بما يسمى السلامة الإقليمية لجورجيا ضمن حدود جمهورية جورجيا السوفياتية السابقة نظرا لوجود نزاع إقليمي قانوني قائم بالفعل بين جمهورية أبخازيا وجمهورية جورجيا حيث أن الأخيرة تطالب بإقليم أبخازيا.

Prior to the admission of Georgia into the family of the United Nations in 1992, the Government and Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia made an appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations warning the United Nations against recognition of the so-called territorial integrity of Georgia within the borders of the former Soviet Union Republic of Georgia since there was already legal territorial dispute between the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of Georgia, the latter of which claimed the territory of Abkhazia.
