On the death of Alexander II on 21 April 1073, as the obsequies were being performed in the Lateran Basilica, there arose a loud outcry from the clergy and people: "Let Hildebrand be pope!", "Blessed Peter has chosen Hildebrand the Archdeacon!"

Bij de uitvaart van Alexander II (gestorven 21 april 1073) in de basiliek van Sint-Jan van Lateranen ontstond er luid geschreeuw van zowel de geestelijkheid als het volk: "Laat Hildebrand paus worden", "De gezegende Petrus heeft Hildebrand, de aartsdiaken uitverkozen!"
