På grund af de biologiske og biogeografiske værdier, som dette naturområde repræsenterer, er det blevet indlemmet i Natura 2000-nettet, det er blevet foreslået til lokalitet af fællesskabsbetydning (LAF) og udpeget som særligt fuglebeskyttelsesområde, begge med kode ESO00037 og med benævnelsen »Estrecho« (Gibraltarstrædet).
