He progressed to car racing in 2002 and was the runner up in the Formula Renault 2.0 Brazil and Formula 3 Sudamericana championships. Di Grassi took two consecutive victories in the 2004 British Formula Three Championship and progressed to the Euro Series the following year which saw him clinch a solitary race victory and was the winner of the non-championship Macau Grand Prix.

Après plusieurs années de karting, Lucas di Grassi débute en sport automobile en 2002, en championnat du Brésil de Formule Renault. L'année suivante, il accède au championnat d'Amérique du Sud de Formule 3 qu'il termine en deuxième position. La même année, il fait ses débuts en Europe, dans le relevé championnat de Formule 3 Euro Series avant de disputer à temps complet le championnat britannique de la spécialité en 2004.
