I do not deny this oath only because it is the oath of allegiance, but I deny it because it is an oath and because Christ Jesus has said, Swear not at all, neither by heaven, nor by earth, nor any other oath; and if I might gain the whole world for swearing of an oath, I could not; and whatever I have to lose this day, for not swearing, I am ready to offer up."
