To some extent, this has been a return to the tradition of the charismatic presidents –ephemeral though they were, due to the political instability of the times– of the 1st Republic, such as Teófilo Braga and Sidonio Pais, both of whom were able to use the broad powers granted to presidents by the Constitution of 1911.
