It is remarkable that Schmidt broke away from the scenographic principles of his major teacher, the famous director Jürgen Fehling, on the symposium of dramatic advisors in 1957, without pointing out this important step in particular. That confirms the analysis that the artist stands within his art deepestly during the period of the turning point; and that he creates his most important works during this period – creations that made theatre history.
