La major part de la zona d'estepa de la Unió Soviètica es trobava a les repúbliques d'Ucraïna i Kazakhstan; la molt menor estepa russa es troba principalment entre aquests països, estenent-se cap al sud entre el mar Negre i el mar Caspi abans d'unir-se al cada vegada més sec territori de la república de Kalmukia.

Most of the Soviet Union's steppe zone was located in the Ukrainian and Kazakh republics; the much smaller Russian steppe is located mainly between those nations, extending southward between the Black and Caspian Seas before blending into the increasingly desiccated territory of the Republic of Kalmykia.
