When making use of blasphemous inversions of biblical motives in Die heilige Cäcilie oder Die Gewalt der Musik — the most important one being the reversal of two music-centred textual motives taken from the Book of Daniel — Kleist is drawing heavily on the hermetic tradition, which also accounts for his apparently “satanic” conception of God.
