Der Ahnherr des polnischen Wappens ist wahrscheinlich der Seeadler als der größte polnische Raubvögel. Er nistet im Norden des Landes, hauptsächlich auf der Insel Wollin und nahe der Ostseeküste.

L'ancetre de l'oiseau qui se trouve sur l'embleme national de la Pologne est probablement un autre aigle, appelé le pygargue a queue blanche, le plus grand oiseau rapace polonais. Un nombre tres restreint d'oiseaux de cette espece nidifie dans le nord du pays, avant tout sur l'île de Wolin et sur la côte de la Mer Baltique.

Предположительно, прообразом герба Польши - "белого орла" послужил орел другого вида - орлан-белохвост, самая крупная хищная птица в Польше. Свои немногочисленные гнезда она вьет на севере страны, в основном на острове Волин, и на побережье Балтийского моря.
