12 The fact that Frisian managed to survive as a written language without ever enjoying the status of an official language is largely, if not exclusively, attributable to the works of the Frisian Renaissance poet Gysbert Japicx (1603-1666), whose three-volume ‘Friesche Rymlerye’ was published posthumously in 1668. 13 At the beginning of the nineteenth century, an independent literary scene and national consciousness blossomed in Fryslân as in many other European countries.

Le fait qu’il soit parvenu à survivre en tant que langue écrite sans jamais jouir d’un statut de langue officielle est largement, sinon entièrement, attribuable aux travaux du poète frison de la Renaissance Gysbert Japicx (1603-1666), dont l’œuvre majeur en trois volumes, ‘Friesche Rymlerye’, est parue en 1668 c’est-àdire après la mort de l’intéressé 13 . Au début du XIXe siècle, la Frise, comme beaucoup d’autres pays européens, connut un mouvement littéraire indépendant et un regain de conscience nationale.
