The main success of the national movement in 1988-1989 was the adoption on August 31, 1989 by the Supreme Soviet of Moldova of the Moldavian language as official, declaration in the preamble of a Moldavian-Romanian linguistic unity, and the return of the language to the pre-Soviet Latin alphabet.
