The scene would be engraved for ever on her memory: the backdrop of darkly gleaming antiques, the slender classical figures painted on the ceiling; and, standing face to face, the ageing dandy, elegant and ambivalent in appearance, and the thin, shabby man in the crumpled raincoat, looking at each other in silence, as if waiting for someone, possibly the prompter hidden behind one of the pieces of period furniture, to give the cue to begin the final act.

La escena era demasiado extraordinaria como para no fijarla bien en su memoria: el decorado de antigüedades de tonos oscuros y amortiguados reflejos, el techo cubierto de esbeltas figuras clásicas, el viejo dandy de elegante y equívoco aspecto, y el desastrado hombre flaco de la gabardina arrugada, frente a frente, contemplándose en silencio, como en espera de que alguien, posiblemente el apuntador oculto en alguno de los muebles de época, diese el pie de entrada para iniciar el último acto.
