Industrialization and urbanization not only increasingly limited the scope for the use of Low German which by now had been reduced to a local idiom, but ultimately also resulted in the decline and dissolution of the local language community where the regional vernacular had its actual sphere of life.

L’industrialisation et l’urbanisation ont eu pour effet non seulement de réduire de plus en plus le champ d’utilisation du bas-allemand, désormais réduit à l’état d’idiome local, mais aussi de provoquer le déclin et la dissolution de la communauté linguistique qui était pour cette langue son véritable milieu naturel.
