Partint d'una comprensió dialèctica-materialista sobre el lloc de la humanitat a la Naturalesa , l'ateisme marxista-leninista proposa que la religió és l'opi del poble, destinada a promoure la acceptació passiva de la pobresa i explotació com a forma normal de la vida humana a la Terra, amb l'esperança d'una recompensa espiritual després de la mort; així, el marxisme-leninisme propugna l'ateisme, i no pas la creença religiosa.

Based upon a dialectical-materialist understanding of humanity's place in Nature, Marxist–Leninist atheism proposes that religion is the opium of the people, meant to promote a person's passive acceptance of his and her poverty and exploitation as the normal way of human life on Earth in the hope of a spiritual reward after death; thus, Marxism–Leninism advocates atheism, rather than religious belief.
