rior to the 1870s or 1880s, nearly all of the significant mineral deposits in Canada were discovered accidentally by individuals who were not actively searching for deposits. The discovery of placer gold in the Cariboo district in 1859 resulted in gold and basemetal prospecting in the mountainous regions of British Columbia and also in gold prospecting in the Yukon Territory.

En effet, ces travaux permirent de découvrir, en 1893, le gisement gigantesque de plomb-zinc-argent Sullivan situé à Kimberley (C.-B.). La mine dégarnie de ses minerais a fermé en 2001, mais on en a néanmoins extrait 10 Mt de plomb, 10 Mt de zinc, 9900 t d’argent ainsi que des quantités beaucoup moindres d’antimoine, d’étain, de bismuth, de cadmium, de gallium, de germanium et d’indium.
