Diese erhabene Benennung ist jedoch nicht so zu verstehen, als ob das unaussprechliche Band, womit der Sohn Gottes eine bestimmte menschliche Natur mit sich vereinigte, auch die Gesamtkirche umfasse. Sie hat vielmehr ihren Grund darin, daß unser Erlöser die Güter, die Ihm vornehmlich eigen sind, so seiner Kirche mitteilt, daß diese in ihrem ganzen Leben, dem sichtbaren wie dem geheimnisumhüllten, Christi Bild möglichst vollkommen zum Ausdruck bringt.

54. Nevertheless this most noble title of the Church must not be so understood as if that ineffable bond by which the Son of God assumed a definite human nature belongs to the universal Church; but it consists in this, that our Savior shares prerogatives peculiarly His own with the Church in such a way that she may portray, in her whole life, both exterior and interior, a most faithful image of Christ.

" Toutefois, il ne faut pas comprendre cette noble appellation comme si le lien ineffable par lequel le Fils de Dieu a pris une nature humaine concrète s'étendait à l'Eglise entière, mais bien en ce sens que notre Sauveur communique à son Eglise des biens qui lui sont tout à fait propres, pour qu'elle reproduise dans tout son mode de vivre, aussi bien visible que caché, avec toute la perfection possible, l'image du Christ.
