His work between 1939 and 1948 on the Italian algebraic geometry in the tradition of F. Severi and L. Godeaux led to his thesis, in which he gave a theory of ideals in the framework of graded commutative rings without zero divisors and applied it to the notion of liaison among algebraic varieties.
