Krkonoše se nacházejí v sousedství tzv. Černého trojúhelníku, oblasti, kde byla v té době největší imisní zátěž z celé Evropy. Společně s přemnožením hmyzích škůdců to vedlo k odumření více než 8 000 ha horských smrkových lesů.
