Das wichtigste Ergebnis dieses Aufsatzes ist, daß die plausibelsten Komponenten des Utilitarismus (Welfarismus, Konsequentialismus und Maximierung), die in der Regel herangezogen werden um ihn als eine intuitiv überzeugende Theorie darzustellen, tatsächlich nicht zur Begründung des Utilitarismus hinreichen, da sie nicht begründen können, daß der beste Zustand derjenige mit der größten Menge an nicht-moralisch Gutem ist und also nicht begründen können, daß wir diesen Zustand herbeiführen und damit die Gesamtsumme des nicht-moralisch Guten maximieren sollen.

3. Those most plausible components of utilitarianism that are used to present it as an intuitively compelling moral theory – welfarism, consequentialism and maximization –, do not in fact support utilitarianism because they do not establish that the best state of affairs is the one with the highest sum total of the non-moral good and therefore do not establish that we ought to bring about this state of affairs, i. e. maximize the sum total of the non-moral good.
