Some years later, in 1859, the Swiss philanthropist Henry Dunant crossed Lombardy, which at that time had been ruthlessly razed to the ground, reached Solferino on the evening of a bloody battle, and found to his horror that thousands of soldiers lay mutilated, abandoned, and neglected, condemned to certain death.
