The programme is being organised and funded by the BMDO and carried out by the Army Program Executive Office for Air and Missile Defence. As explained in Assembly Document 1588, the THAAD architecture is composed of four elements: – – – – truck-mounted launchers to protect and transport the interceptors; interceptors which consist of a single-stage booster and a kinetic kill vector (which intercepts by hit-to-kill collision); the THAAD radar system which supports the full range of surveillance, target tracking and fire control functions, and provides a communication link with the interceptor in flight; the battle management command, control, communications, computer and intelligence system (BM/C3I) which manages and integrates all the architecture segments by providing instructions and communications and by processing data gathered by the sensors.
