Actually, although the entrance was badly collapsed and barely passable (Boofa and Chooka had real trouble squeezing through) the walls of the tunnel seemed to be in surprisingly good shape. The wooden props had clearly rotted out and many of them lay about on the floor of the tunnel in a random fashion – but the walls themselves showed little sign of crumbling. The cool, damp rock seemed pretty firm. We wandered about for a while – one of the ‘mummy’s boys’ had a panic attack and, I confess, I felt first touch of claustrophobia, too. But I was okay and, after half an hour or so, before we actually lost anyone in what turned out to be more of a labyrinth than a mere tunnel, the squad emerged back into the daylight to resume our pointless wanderings. Had I ever intended to go back? No, but that’s where David and I were now headed. I had estimated it would take David and me approximately an hour to find the tunnel. That was how long it had taken my squad to march out of the bush once my squad’s ‘rescuers’ had arrived. But they, unlike me, had known what they were doing. So, this time round, it ended up taking a little longer than I had expected. By midday next day, I was exhausted, having been stumbling about in the bush for hours and, apparently, no closer to our goal. I sat down on the hard earth and wept a little. (Okay! I was fuckin’ tired and still pretty sick! Don’t forget that I could barely walk when I’d been picked up at the infirmary and the adrenalin rush was, by this time, long gone.) David was moaning – of course. I fell asleep in the sun – but, on this occasion (unlike my unplanned snooze in the Castlemaine Gardens), it did not lead to dire consequences. I’d say it was an hour or so later when I awoke. I could hear David groaning – not a surprise – but it was in the distance and now there was an urgency about his groaning. I followed the groaning for, maybe, two hundred metres up the hill upon which I had been sleeping. David was standing (in triumph?) at the mouth of the tunnel, grinning and roaring.

David stepped towards me and gently lifted the cat from my grip. The cat instantly calmed down. The fucking thing started purring as he held it! Another of the zombies came forward and seemingly begged David to pass it over. “Gween”? Was this a word? Was this the cat’s name? Can’t say – I never did hear a zombie, any zombie, utter another syllable – at that time. I was having trouble getting my head around the situation: I was in a fetid den with a bunch of zombies – many of whom had, no doubt, recently slaughtered and eaten their fellow students – and now they were fussing over this rotten cat just like so many old women! The Catholic church almost exterminated the domestic cat in Europe during the Middle Ages – on the basis that it was the servant of the Devil or some such. What a load of superstitious nonsense, eh? Eh? Despite the coolness of our welcome, David seemed intent on spending the night among his fellows – and amid the rank, decaying filth that lay all about. “Nice little place you got here, Fellas,” I said. “I like the way you’ve decorated it.” No response. Zombies apparently have no sense of irony. But I knew I would be safe there – and nowhere else but where David was. So, I stayed. But I didn’t actually get any sleep. You might think I was nervous about one of my co-residents suddenly requiring a midnight snack. But no! I was now quite certain that David’s presence protected me absolutely from zombie attack. What kept me awake was that friggin’ tortoiseshell cat. It parked itself in the opposite corner of the room and kept me under constant observation. I could see its wide green eyes glowing in the dark. Whenever I chanced to close my own eyes, it was on the move, creeping ever closer to me. When I opened them again, it retreated. “This is ridiculous,” I thought. “It’s just a little pussy cat. You need some sleep, Pete.”

It was these ‘spot-fires’ that the authorities had been concentrating on in the first days after the initial outbreak. If they could locate the source of a fresh outbreak quickly – and he (or they) wasn’t usually trying to hide – they could stamp out that fresh outbreak completely. Picking off one or two zombies ahead of the ‘tide’ was a much more achievable goal than successfully confronting a vast and uncontrolled army of the things on a wide front. There had been, apparently, hundreds of plague spot fires controlled in this way but many more were still occurring – according to the BBC, at least. I couldn’t argue with this part of the strategy – but, of necessity, it meant that we, in Melbourne, would remain on our own for some time to come. Or did it? The BBC newscast, somewhat cryptically, concluded by saying that overseas forces were on the way to reinforce the Australian troops (we’d guessed that much) and that, in preparation for their arrival, the Port of Melbourne would need to be retaken – and the facilities made ready - in order to receive and process troop and supply ships. (And, incidentally, to stop the infected from exiting overseas.) The Port of Melbourne? That was only a mile or so from the university. Perhaps we’d be seeing action sooner than we thought.

THE INFIRMARY The next thing I remember was coughing up blood. I was no longer in the decompression chamber. I couldn’t focus my eyes – and I was so ill that I didn’t give a rat’s arse where I was. Deep, excoriating coughs seized me time and time again – and, time and time again, great gouts of coagulating blood emerged from my throat. Do you know how shitty you feel when you’ve got a stomach upset and you start ‘heaving your heart out’? Multiply that by 50 times. “If these are my actual lungs that I am coughing up,” I wondered, “ how on Earth am I still breathing?” A young nurse was attending me and catching my bloody ejecta in a shiny metal bowl. She showed no sign of disgust. She didn’t ask me to speak. She could see that I was beyond speech. She smiled encouragingly at me and stroked the still- raw scorch marks that she could see on my bare forearm. That was nice. “What evil have they done to you?” she whispered, apparently to herself. There were curtains drawn about my bed. Was that to protect my privacy or to keep prying eyes away? I saw a silhouetted head briefly appear at the side of one curtain. I could not make out the features of the backlit face but I felt sure it was Doctor Ingrid. The silhouette lingered for a few seconds only, long enough to exchange a glance but no words with the nurse attending me. Then it was gone. “You know she saved your life, young fella,” said the nurse, simply. “Tell!” I rasped. (Actually, I meant to say “Tell me!” but the second word did not come.) The nurse looked uncertain about this. Would she get into trouble for telling me what she had seen or heard?

WHAT DID ‘THE REG’ SAY AGAIN? Picture, if you will, a seminar room full of eager boy soldiers – all about 15 or 16 years old – very earnest, very self-important and very proud of ‘the uniform’ they wore. I had once been one of those boy soldiers (or ‘toy soldiers’, as some would have it). As a fourth form student, I had been in such a seminar room at Puckapunyal army base – wide-eyed and anxious to learn the lessons of war. Like most boys of my generation, I was an Army Cadet – I think I mentioned this earlier. Hard to believe now – i.e. that most of our schoolboys would routinely be trained in the art of war – but nevertheless true. (Some would later be sent to fight in Vietnam – usually against their will.) Did we learn a lot about the true nature of war? No, not a lot, it must be confessed. But, suddenly, the meagre knowledge that I had acquired in that particular seminar needed urgently to be summoned from the deepest recesses of my memory. The topic: Jungle Warfare. What did that ‘Reg’ (regular army officer) say again? I remember him well. He was very impressive – to me, at least. Tall and athletic, his crisp, tailored uniform was adorned with shiny brass buttons. (I could never get mine to shine like that – ‘Brasso’ simply didn’t do the trick. It later turned out that the regulars no longer needed to polish their buttons at all – they’d been anodised.) He said he’d served two tours of ‘Nam. (He was in his late twenties, I suppose.) He spoke with the confidence that commanding ‘fighting men’ gave to one – or so I supposed. But why on Earth was such an experienced soldier assigned to the menial task of lecturing school kids? I can safely assume it had nothing to do with the quality and military potential of the spotty-faced members of the audience.

At the last came two false witnesses, 61and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 62And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? 63But Jesus held his peace. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
