The others looked at him. The shadow of the fear of the Black Riders came suddenly over them again. Ever since they had entered the Forest they had thought chiefly of getting back to the Road; only now when it lay beneath their feet did they remember the danger which pursued them, and was more than likely to be lying in wait for them upon the Road itself. They looked anxiously back towards the setting sun, but the Road was brown and empty.

But what? David and I did not have to wait long to get an answer to that question. Soon, helicopters hovered overhead – unseen but definitely heard. Spotlights shone blindingly from the aircraft and played upon the throng – and then the shooting started. These, it seemed, were no ordinary helicopters. They were spitting fire from both sides and beams of tracer bullets rent the black sky, raining down on the zombies below. Dozens fell at once – others fled in all directions, trampling on the fallen. The scream of terrified zombies is hard to describe – the sound of thousands of them screaming together is impossible. So, what terrifies a zombie? Well, I can tell you for certain that helicopter gunships do. I couldn’t exactly say how or why these thousands of zombies had been herded back onto the campus where it had all begun – but, now that they were here, it was clear what fate the authorities intended for them. David and I needed to get out and fast. If we were to avoid being strafed by gunfire – or trampled by the panicked undead – I needed a plan. We were hemmed in on all sides. I seized David’s hand even more firmly – he, too, was terrified but seemed to calm a little at my firmer hold. I took him to the base of one of the trees in North Court. We cowered there for precious seconds as the concrete courtyard emptied a little. Time to think. My vision narrowed to a tunnel. I ceased to hear the screams and the gunfire around me. For me, everything went silent. Time slowed to a crawl. My mind had re-directed its entire effort towards solving a single problem: escape. Where to go that might be safe? The only place I could think of was the family crypt in Melbourne General Cemetery, the one where we’d found Paul and Charles. It was ten minutes’ stroll away – in normal circumstances. But, under heavy attack from the air – and with thousands of wailing, murderous zombies between us and that crypt?

I rested for the remainder of the day, deep within the complex, and sustained myself with more corned beef and tinned vegetables. (I still couldn’t face the dog biscuits.) As evening approached, I moved back to the mouth of the tunnel. Immediately, I could hear noises from outside, close outside. Had the searchers found my hide- away? Were they simply waiting for me to emerge before emptying their machine-gun magazines into me? I fought the urge to retreat back along the tunnel. I waited and listened, my heart pounding a mile a minute. The noises continued, on and off. I had heard them before but when? “No-one lying in wait would be so friggin’ noisy about it,” I reasoned. “Would they?” Then it came to me, the time when I had heard these noises before. “Gronnff! Gronnff! Gronnff! Nunnff! Nunnff!” It was the noise of a zombie feasting on a fresh kill – it could only be David. (What a noisy little eater he was!) With my heart beating out of my chest, I again ventured a peek out of my lair. What did I see? The contented figure of my Brother Zombie, silhouetted in the gathering gloom. I still resisted the urge to bolt from the tunnel and wrap him up in my arms out of sheer relief. Snipers might yet be about, waiting to take both of us out at once. But they weren’t – no snipers hereabouts just yet. I approached David. He was very pleased with himself, wasn’t he? Munch, munch, munch on what looked like a large bit of liver, blood dripping down his arms – just like a child’s ice-cream does on a hot day. And he had something grisly draped around his neck, like some obscene laurel wreath (which was quite appropriate, as it turned out). I took a closer look to confirm that it was indeed what I thought it was. It was as I had thought: a considerable length of someone’s small intestine. (Why are zombies so fixated on people’s intestines? It can’t be healthy, can it?)

He seemed offended. He walked with me back to the front of the office. When we reached the reception area, he passed his eyes over the numerous zombies which were seated there. “Mr Tremelling?” he called. An elderly zombie stood and walked towards his office. But I caught his arm before he left the area himself. “But, sir, all your staff are dead. They’re rotting on the floor.” “Nonsense!” he retorted. “Staff morale in this office has never been higher.” “And, as I’ve said, all your clients are zombies.” He was incensed. “Young man, please leave. You’re upsetting my clients.” I looked towards the other zombies, still seated. Were they upset? Difficult to say. Certainly, David seemed very happy. The solicitor left, walked along the corridor with his client and closed his office door behind him. I decided to leave as well and called David to come with me. He was reluctant to go. Why would we leave all these lovely people? Then, I heard singing from the rear of building. Another survivor. The singing was loud and out of tune. The words were poorly enunciated. I decided to go back down the corridor to investigate – and to leave David to his new friends for the moment. The singing stopped and a racist tirade began. The subjects of the tirade seemed to be anyone who was not white. Australian aboriginals were especially ‘favoured’ by the speaker. I arrived at this other survivor’s office. He sat amongst huge piles of legal files and empty wine bottles. He saw me and started singing again. Then he stopped abruptly. “Are you Jewish?” he shouted. “No,” I answered quietly.
