The adder (Vipera berus) is not mentioned in Annex II nor in Annex IV to Directive 92/0043/EC so it does not have the protection of this Directive.

The heads of the members of this genus are clearly separated from the body, they are triangular in shape and in most species are covered in small scales, although in some species, notably Vipera berus, have small plates on the top of their heads.
