“THIS IS THE BBC WORLD SERVICE” On the floor below the Rowden White Gallery was situated the ‘Activities Office’ – which then co-ordinated all the activities of the various student clubs – and doled out grants to them in a more or less ramshackle way. As I recall, the editor of the student newspaper, ‘Farrago’, was then situated in the adjacent room. But, no matter. So, what was I looking for there? Actually, I was initially looking for some clue as to where I might find some sophisticated ‘Ham Radio’ equipment on campus. Surely, I thought, if there were some club that used such equipment, the activities office would have a record of it. But, instantly I entered the office, I abandoned that search. One of the office staff had sitting on his or her desk just what I needed: a high- quality transistor radio. In those days, all good ‘trannies’ had the capacity to receive short-wave radio signals. My dad had an early ‘National Panasonic’ that did just that. But the performance of such small receivers was always disappointing – and, as a result, people rarely bothered using this facility, preferring to stick with good ol’ AM band pop/chat trash. This didn’t bother me when my eyes fell upon the tranny in the Activities Office. I knew that I would only be able to receive two or three of the strongest short- wave signals – and then only in a spasmodic (fade in/fade out) fashion. This was enough. I just needed some news from the outside world – beyond the local media blackout. I was hoping for the “Voice of America” but soon, David and I heard the dulcet tones of an announcer saying: “This is the BBC World Service”.

Cornwall Council is the Unitary Authority for Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Cornwall Council leads the Cornish language programme and has established the Cornish Language Office. The Cornish Language Lead is responsible for increasing the use of Cornish in the work of the Council, giving advice to organisations who want to use Cornish and for coordinating projects in the community. The Cornish Language Strategy 2015-2025 sets out future development of the language and is made up of four main parts: Status, Use, Acquisition and Corpus. The Strategy aims to increase the number of Cornish speakers and create more opportunities to use Cornish. The Cornish language is in a stronger state than it has been for a long time, but just like all small languages, there is a need for a programme to protect, support and develop the language. Each year, the Cornish Language Office supports projects which will increase the use of Cornish and the skills and capacity to develop the language. A list of our current and previous projects can be found here.

I realised immediately that I’d been overly optimistic – I had thought he might remember, in the deep recesses of his ‘mind’ that he had once been the family’s resident card-sharp. Apparently not – poker was out of the question. Maybe ‘snap’? No, I thought, I would start at an even more basic level than that – just as you would start with a small child. I would spread the cards out in front of him, grouping them in their suits and lining them up according to their numbers and images. Did David still have the capacity for pattern recognition with his degraded sight and his degraded mind? David and I sat cross-legged on the floor, facing each other in the semi- darkness of the crypt. He seemed to be watching me carefully as I lay out the four rows of cards in front of him: all the diamonds, all the hearts, all the spades and all the clubs in numerical order. What did he see? I sat silently as he seemed to move his head slowly in order to scan across the rows of cards – and back again. He started to make little grunting noises and then, with a roar and a violent sweep of his hand, scattered the deck across the floor. He put his face up close to mine and roared angrily once more – and then retreated to his makeshift bed and turned his back on me. “That went well,” I thought to myself, believing the opposite. I remained seated (and stunned) on the floor – but, within a short time, started to reconsider what had just happened. “If the cards truly meant nothing to him,” I wondered, “why the sudden display of anger?” Why the pointed retreat from me? That was not mere boredom or irritation. Had the cards triggered some painful memory? Was he suddenly aware of what he had now lost? I would have to wait and see. I was not going to get any more out of him today.
