Does the Commission recall that in the area which until the 1912 Balkan War was part of the Ottoman Empire and now forms the northern part of Greece there were many people who regarded themselves as Albanians, Vlachs (Aromanians or Zinzars), Macedonians, Turks or Bulgarians, and spoke the corresponding languages or, especially in the city of Thessaloniki, the Judeo-Spanish Ladino language, and that in certain localities and regions these groups formed the majority, with the consequence that those places had different names in Turkish (the language of the State) and in the regional languages of their inhabitants, e.g. Macedonian?
