In 1999, the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Kazakhstan signed the “Istanbul Declaration” which defined the major parameters of the Baku – Tbilisi – Ceyhan (BTC) project aimed at the construction of an international pipeline, with a total length of 1768 km and a design capacity of 50 million tonnes per year, that would deliver Caspian crude oil to the Mediterranean Sea.
