A new year and a new location for Kan Rag Kernow. The event was held at the Hotel Lowenac in Camborne for the first time and the move was a success with an excellent atmosphere on the evening. Four groups took part in the competition – unfortunately a fifth could not make it – the Aggie Boys’ Choir. The quality of the entries was high, all of them with strong songs and original and diverse performances, from a personal tale from Tir ha Tavas, to a song conjuring up the atmosphere of a voyage on the sea, to a song in the voice of Miss Havisham from Dickens’ Great Expectations. But the winners of the night were The Rowan Tree with their song Tresor (Treasure). It was very lively and memorable, and the perfect song to represent Kernow. Good luck to The Rowan Tree in Ireland in April – our fingers are crossed!

‘That is the signal for supper!’ said Bilbo. The pain and alarm vanished at once, and the prostrate hobbits leaped to their feet. There was a splendid supper for everyone; for everyone, that is, except those invited to the special family dinner-party. This was held in the great pavilion with the tree. The invitations were limited to twelve dozen (a number also called by the hobbits one Gross, though the word was not considered proper to use of people); and the guests were selected from all the families to which Bilbo and Frodo were related, with the addition of a few special unrelated friends (such as Gandalf). Many young hobbits were included, and present by parental permission; for hobbits were easy-going with their children in the matter of sitting up late, especially when there was a chance of getting them a free meal. Bringing up young hobbits took a lot of provender.

It was the police who drove a riot van towards people standing on a narrow bit of pavement above a cliff top. It was the police who held the line and allowed the fascists space to have their demonstration—and note they only turned up after a heavy police presence in the area had been established. It was the police who stopped traffic, and then seemed annoyed that we were in the road—and indeed, initially, they wanted to give the far right even more space.

The Cornish Pirates v. Ampthill -- After back-to-back losses, a win this week-end was very important – both for the players and the supporters. It was Ampthill who scored first. Following two consecutive penalties given away by The Pirates inside the first four minutes, Ampthill kicked to the corner and from a ‘catch and drive’ move, they scored an unconverted try. It was The Pirates turn to score next when Ampthill gave away a penalty in front of the posts. The Pirates chose the kick at goal, and Arwel Robson made no mistake, 3-5. Both teams continued to attack but many of the Pirates’ positive moves failed either by penalties or mistakes. It was Ampthill again who were next to score, which they did after another penalty given away by the Pirates, and following a 5-metre line-out they scored their second unconverted try, 3-10. The Pirates attacked strongly and after their rolling maul was held up, they succeeded with their second chance, when Will Crane was driven over the line. It seemed that this would be the score at half-time, but again The Pirates gave away a penalty in front of the posts – which also saw a yellow card – and the two teams left the field with the score 10-13. The second half proved to be in reality the same as the first, with both teams attacking fiercely, but through stout defending, without change to the score board. The half continued thus and it seemed certain that Ampthill would score, but they were unable to cross the line. Then with 7 minutes left on the clock, The Pirates gave away a further penalty and at the same time, seeing a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. With one forward down for the remainder of the match and Ampthill in the red zone, a loss seemed certain. Ampthill saw their chance and kicked for the cornel. Perhaps this situation raised The Pirates’ will for they defended these last 7 minutes with everything they had. In the last minute, with The Pirates defending on their 5-metre line, they managed to steal the ball and gradually work their way up the field. With the clock deep in the red, they had succeeded in reaching the Ampthill 22 and still advancing, a quick ball was passed to Robin Wedlake, who scored in the corner. Although the conversion attempt failed, The Pirates had won 15-13!

The Corporal was, of course, correct on both counts – neither Ingrid nor the U.S. Sergeant, both theoretically superior in rank, had any authority to order him about. Stalemate. I could see the Sergeant was going to move – even more – into bullying mode. I judged that it wouldn’t work on the Corporal – who obviously knew very well what was the proper chain of command. So, it was time for me to stand up and be counted. I crawled from the back of the first jeep and stood uncertainly beside it. I called out weakly to the guards: “Gentlemen, I’m the reason these officers are here. I’m the one who has caused the rioting over on the parade ground ...” I paused, giddy from standing, before completing my thought. “ ... If you don’t let these guys lock me up for my own protection, you’re going to have a lynching on your hands. I suspect the Camp Commandant will not be well pleased when he has to explain to his superiors why my body is swinging from the flagpole in the morning – when you could have saved him the trouble simply by obeying the orders of the officers now standing in front of you. So, what do you think?” Both the Sergeant and Ingrid turned, as one, and gaped at me in amazement. (Why hadn’t they thought of that?) The guards knew who I was and why I was being held in the camp – it seemed everyone did. The Corporal looked at the Sergeant. “You wanna lock this guy up? Why didn’t you say so in the first place? That’s easy – no orders required.” And, with that, I joined the Sergeant and Ingrid, the guards stood aside and we entered the building without further ado. Then the Sergeant briefly turned back and spoke to the now-confused driver of the second jeep – who was apparently in on the overall plan and had been listening to everything that had just been said: “You’re dismissed, soldier. I will see you later.” The driver of the second jeep, briefly, looked puzzled.
