Considers that the new information technologies may create even greater regional and social disparities in the European Union than at present and considers that in order to obviate this risk, the use of information highways should focus on correcting the existing imbalances and discrepancies between the regions of the European Union in terms of economic and social development, and social and regional problems (tele- medicine, distance learning, teleworking, tele-administration, etc.), with a view to obtaining benefits whose general availability will stimulate progress; there is a risk that these opportunities will not be available in all regions, with the result that the differences between them will become, if anything, even greater, to the detriment of cohesion policy and development convergence;
23. anser att den nya informationstekniken kan leda till en ny geografisk och social uppdelning av unionen som är större än den som redan nu existerar; för att undvika denna risk bör utnyttjandet av de elektroniska motorvägarna inriktas på att råda bot på den ojämlikhet och de skillnader i ekonomisk och social utvecklingsnivå som förekommer mellan regionerna i Europeiska unionen och på att lösa sociala och territoriella problem (distansläkarvård, distansutbildning, distansarbete, distansförvaltning, etc.), i syfte att uppnå fördelar vars allmänna spridning skulle utgöra en utvecklingsfaktor; påpekar att det finns risk för att dessa möjligheter inte får allmän spridning i samtliga regioner, vilket skulle innebära att skillnaderna om möjligt ytterligare fördjupades, vilket skulle inverka betungande på sammanhållningspolitiken och konvergensen mellan utvecklingsnivåerna,EurLex-2 EurLex-2
