So far in 2017, China has placed three new oil rigs in the East China Sea, one in each of the months of February, July and August, according to a September report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI). Moreover, the installations appear to "have been accompanied by a spike in activity in Chinese service vessels," AMTI said.
