A yellow-flowered perennial, Narthecium ossifragum found in wet open areas of western Europe, and bearing orange fruits formerly used as a food coloring.
It supports a wide variety of plants; there are the ubiquitous bog cotton, water lilies, pitcher plants, pipewort, wintergreen, bog asphodel, and dozens more.
In spring and summer, the Dwingelderveld heaths are transformed into a multicolored carpet made up of many flowering plants, including blue marsh gentians, pink bog heather, and yellow bog asphodels.
