When Foran attempted to read a statement defending himself in the face of Pouliot’s accusations, Pouliot declared him out of order, and stated that his side of the story was of "no interest" and that he, Pouliot, would "not stand for any criticism."93 The Ottawa Journal sprang to the defence of "simple justice and ordinary sportsmanship toward an old member of the public service" and warned that "democracy is not so entrenched in this country that it can afford too many of the spectacles that this particular Committee has provided."94 Despite Pouliot’s lack of repentance, it was clear that he had gone too far.95 When the Committee met again in 1939, Mr. Pouliot was no longer chairman.
