While in theory RMC and RLC may be defined as sharply distinct varieties of Cornish, the language spoken by many today is situated somewhere in between. For example some users of Middle Cornish-based orthographies will pronounce Middle Cornish long nn in words like penn ‘head’ as dn and say pedn, which is normally considered a feature of RLC. The SWF does not have a bias towards any end of the continuum and tagging is simply meant to help people choose forms that suit their style of Cornish. All kinds of Cornish are encouraged. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, a jewel of children's literature, was first published in 1865. In that same year translations into numerous languages appeared. Ray Edwards' version in Common Cornish, Alys y'n Vro a Varthusyon, was issued by the Cornish Language Board in 1994. A passage from that translation is incorporated into the present version (see pages 26-27). The rest of this book is in the spelling known as Kernowek Standard, or Standard Cornish (KS), which adheres as closely as possible to the traditional orthography of Cornish but which is also completely phonetic. It will be noted that KS uses diacritics to indicate phonetic differences in words spelt the same way, or to distinguish the pronunciation of vowels which can have more than one pronunciation. Since KS is without doubt the best orthography ever developed for revived Cornish, it is used here and is recommended to all learners and speakers of Cornish speakers. This book contains the famous illustrations of Sir John Tenniel, which first appeared in the original English edition.

Whilst working in Nigeria, I was in a position to meet and socialise with educated Nigerian officials and their families. Many of their children were able to converse in English, but seemed reluctant or unable to use their own tribal language. It may have been that they had been discouraged from using their own language. This seemed rather sad and put their own linguistic culture at risk. It seemed reminiscient of Cornish, which had all but become extinct by the 19th century. The pathos and similarity of the situation motivated me to take up learning my own ancient language.

Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

1 JOHN 1 The Incarnation of the Word of Life 1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4We write this to make our joy complete. Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness 5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

1 THESSALONIANS 3 1So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. 2We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, 3so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them. 4In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. 5For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain. Timothy’s Encouraging Report 6But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you. 7Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. 8For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. 9How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. 11Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
