In de communicatiewetenschap is het gebruikelijk het begrip „communicatie” in verschillende bestanddelen te ontleden(20), waaronder in de regel de volgende: (i) de zender, te weten het systeem (voorwerp of persoon) dat de boodschap doorgeeft; (ii) de ontvanger, te weten de geadresseerde die de informatie ontvangt en opneemt; (iii) het kanaal, te weten het medium via hetwelk de boodschap wordt vervoerd of verkregen; (iv) de formele code, te weten het systeem van tekens waarmee communicatie mogelijk wordt; (v) de context, te weten de situatie waarin de communicatiehandeling is ingebed (en waarnaar zij verwijst), en tot slot (vi) de boodschap zelf, te weten de inhoud die gecommuniceerd wordt.
