Het eerste schriftelijke document waarin melding wordt gemaakt van boekweit in de Valtellinastreek dateert uit 1616. Het betreft een bericht van de gouverneur van Valle dell’Adda in het Zwitserse kanton Graubünden: „Boekweit werd hoofdzakelijk verbouwd in de Retische Alpen, met name in het district Teglio, waar het klimaat dankzij het groter aantal zonuren milder is.”.
