Op 20 januari startte het offensief om de zak van Colmar weg te werken en daarbij zo min mogelijk Duitsers te laten ontsnappen.
On the 20th of January, the offensive to conquer the Colmar pocket started with hopes of few Germans escaping.

Op 9 februari 1944 om 8 uur 's ochtends werd de brug op geblazen. Hiermee kwam een einde aan de zak van Colmar.
The bridge was blown up on February 9th and that ended the battle of the Colmar Pocket.

Sigolsheim lag op de rand van de zak van Colmar en is hierdoor een aantal keer bevrijd en weer heroverd door de Duitsers.

6 Considering that the decision to be given depended on the interpretation of Article 30 et seq . of the EEC Treaty "having regard to the International Convention on the Use of Names for Cheeses" the cour d' appel, Colmar, stayed the proceedings and referred the following question to the Court for a preliminary ruling :

11 Nadat haar vordering bij vonnis van 16 juni 1987 was verworpen, stelde Sermes beroep in bij de cour d' appel de Colmar, die de behandeling van de zaak heeft geschorst en het Hof krachtens artikel 177 EEG-Verdrag heeft verzocht om een prejudiciële beslissing over de volgende vraag :

De soldaten die hier begraven zijn zijn voor het grootste deel slachtoffers van de zak van Colmar en lagen eerst op 225 verschillende plaatsen in het departement Haut-Rhin.
Most of the soldiers who are buried here are victims of the Colmar Pocket. At first they were buried on 225 different places in the department.

Thann was na drie dagen strijd op 10 december wel bevrijd maar lag aan de rand van de zak van Colmar en heeft daardoor nog twee maanden onder Duits vuur gelegen.
Thann was liberated after three days of fighting and it was on the borderline of the Colmar pocket. This town was under heavy German fire for another two months.
